People could adapt and innovate to lead the way if there was more ability to innovate locally, especially outside the bounds of our dysfunctional urban sprawl where people spend to much of their time behind the steering wheel of a powered conveyance. Now consider this: it costs $2700 to get a forty foot container out of a port and $2700 to have the contents delivered to a destination 250km away as against $5800 to get it from Qingdao to Fremantle.
The problem is that solutions require hard choices.
There is no path forward without a surprise external catalyst that manages a return to broad based prosperity without their being some degree of hardship and a change to the current set of winners and losers.
Your point regarding the container transport is a nice encapsulation of one of the major problems we face, the idea that wages and by extension costs can keep rising to keep up with the cost of living, most notably housing.
